Have you ever wondered how to make yogurt from milk? It’s surprisingly easy and we’re here to guide you through the simple and delicious process of turning fresh milk into creamy, homemade yogurt. With just two fresh ingredients and a little patience, you'll be enjoying the tangy goodness of homemade yogurt in no time.
How Do You Make Yogurt from Milk?
Making yogurt from fresh milk is incredibly rewarding. You don't even need a fancy yogurt maker – just some high-quality milk, like ours at Little Big Dairy Co, and a little plain live natural yogurt.
Here's a step-by-step guide to crafting your own yogurt at home:
You’ll need:
- 500ml fresh milk
- 1tbsp plain live natural yogurt
This recipe can be scaled up for a larger yield.
For the best results use the finest milk available. We suggest Little Big Dairy Co's range of single-source milk, with full cream, less cream, and lactose-free milk options too. The higher the fat content in the milk, the higher the fat content in your yogurt, and the thicker your yogurt will be.
- Begin by heating the milk to 85°C in a large pan to remove any surplus bacteria.
- Remove from the heat and allow to cool to 46°C to create the perfect environment for the yogurt cultures to thrive.
- In a small bowl mix the plain live natural yogurt with 3 tablespoons of the cooled milk. This mixture is your yogurt starter, providing the live active cultures needed to ferment the milk.
- Stir the yogurt starter mixture back into the remaining milk, ensuring the live cultures are evenly distributed throughout.
- Pour the milk mixture into a flask, seal the flask well, and leave it to set at room temperature for 10 hours, or up to 24 hours. The longer you incubate, the tangier and thicker your yogurt will become.
- Once the yogurt has set to your liking, transfer it to sterilised jars, seal tightly, and refrigerate. Your homemade yogurt will keep for up to 2 weeks, ready to be enjoyed with your favourite toppings!
